Preparing for the future; living life in all its fullness

Phonics

We really value the tremendous support which parents and carers give their children to support the development of reading skills.

At Uffington School we use synthetic phonics to teach early reading; the teaching of phonics takes place on a daily basis in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Teaching staff are always happy to give advice regarding ways in which parents and carers can support the development of their children's reading.

Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised

From the Foundation Stage to Year 2 we are now following a new Phonics scheme and all of the children will be learning together. This will involve consolidating sounds learnt in previous years, learning new sounds and alternative pronunciations for these sounds too.

•Terminology: digraph: two letters which make one sound; trigraph: two letters which make one sound split; split digraph: two letters, split, making one sound.

•The Year 1 children are assessed in June by their class teachers for the National Phonics Screening Check. We will give you more information about this nearer to the time and the children will be given opportunities to practise throughout the year.

The link below is designed to help you support your children's learning at home. Further information including videos and resources relating to Reception and KS1 Phonics can be found by visiting
