Preparing for the future; living life in all its fullness

PSHE

PSHE Curriculum Intent:

Nurture: We believe that to be able to embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy.

Curiosity: Encouraging pupils to try new activities and show confidence, independence and resilience in the face of challenge.  Exploring a range of different ways to support themselves and others and make informed decisions about their wellbeing.

Diversity: To help children know the importance of respecting the differences of others, either in school or the wider world. Children should be able to identify and modify their own feelings socially and emotionally and know the importance of self-respect and how this links to their own happiness.

Ambition: To help prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life to ensure our pupils become successful adults who make a positive contribution to society.

Implementation:

Our PSHE curriculum is supplemented by 1Decision, that aims to support PSHE, SMSC development and safeguarding.  The scheme also supports the new statutory changes in Health Education and Relationships Education.  It delivers its core values through three core themes and ten principles of effective education.  We want our pupils to be able to build on knowledge of various topics as well has having the opportunity to relate their own experiences and develop their own confidence to question, examine and begin to think critically about their own beliefs.

The 1Decision scheme that we use to support our delivery of PSHE at Uffington provides clear progressive routes that initially builds on the Early Years programme, using a form of baseline assessment at the beginning of each topic as an assessment of current knowledge.

The delivery of PSHE encompasses nine different modules across both key stages, with some differing modules integrated as children grow older.

To ensure skill progression, each module follows a pattern of learning.  Every module is introduced with a baseline starter assessment to assess current knowledge, then building on knowledge takes place with a summative assessment being completed at the end of each module.  Word banks and key vocabulary are taught and used alongside each themed module.

1Decsion is designed to subtly thread inclusivity throughout the programme, which allows teachers to have autonomy to expand on specific content, in response to the needs of differing cohorts. Celebrations of these modules are collected in a collaborative way in the form of a class floor book.  This allows children to express and present their learning in a variety of ways.

We aim to support and equip our children with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to thrive as they grow and develop.  Our scheme is very adaptable for our teachers and allows them to adapt and enrich as they feel appropriate with opportunities to relocate and revisit learning in different key stages according to the readiness and needs of the children.

Impact:

The impact of following the 1Decision scheme of learning is that children will:

  • Learn and think on both an independent and collaborative level.

  • Continuously build on previous knowledge as they progress through the familiar themed modules.

  • Use and apply key vocabulary within class discussions to further their skills and understanding of various topics.

  • Be aware of their own learning and progress through the use of various assessment tools at the beginning and end of each module.

  • Begin to take risks and be BOLD with their ideas and opinions.
